There’s something about the Outer Banks that feels timeless—like the ocean breezes carry both stories of shipwrecks and the scent of salt-soaked freedom. For a week in early May, we traded the hustle of daily life for coastal serenity, wild horses, seafood feasts, and sunset drives down Highway 12. Here’s our itinerary of our favorite restaurants, historic places, incredible wildlife and more that you won’t want to miss on your next trip to OBX.

Day 1: Arrival & Settling Into Nags Head

After landing and grabbing our rental car, we drove 1.5 hours down to Nags Head, windows down and beach playlists up. We made a detour through Duck—a quaint seaside town—where the Duck Boardwalk gave us our first taste of salty air and laid-back vibes. After a quick grocery run (shoutout to Food Lion and Walmart), we arrived at our Airbnb, right on South Virginia Dare Trail.

Post swim and unpacking, we grabbed our first local bite at Nags Head Pizza Co.—think doughy, delicious pies with a view.

Day 2: Roaming Roanoke Island

The day began slow—coffee, beach chairs, toes in the sand. Later, we explored Roanoke Island and Wanchese, sampling fresh oysters and sipping drinks at local gems like Awful Arthur’s and Fish Heads Bar & Grill. Dinner at Noosa Bar and Grill felt like a tropical escape, topped off with ice cream at Noosa Scoops—because vacation calories don’t count.

Day 3: Fishing, Rodanthe & Lighthouse Adventures

While the guys headed out for a fishing charter, we girls hit Rodanthe. Walking the pier with coffee in hand, we took in the beauty of the Atlantic before heading to the iconic Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest in North America. A must-stop? Orange Blossom Café for their legendary apple uglies. We wrapped the day with local shopping (loved The Cottage Shop and Life is Good) and a relaxed grill dinner back at the house.

Day 4: Sunday Drive & Manteo Magic

After a beachy morning, we cruised over to Manteo, where we immersed ourselves in local lore at the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the lush Elizabethan Gardens. The town’s charm is undeniable—exploring The Christmas Shop, Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, and enjoying lunch at Stripers Bar & Grille was a highlight. We ended the day with cocktails and a fantastic dinner at Ocean Boulevard Bistro and Martini Bar.

Day 5: Wild Horses, Corolla Views & The Colington Cafe

We drove north to Corolla, home of the famous Spanish Mustangs, wild horses that roam the dunes freely. We chose to adventure the sandy beaches solo without the aid of a guide (though there plenty of tours available in town!) but with two 4×4 wheel drive cars, we were confident navigating the soft sandy beaches. And low and behold – how lucky were we to come across 10 wild horses that day, when some folks don’t encounter even one! We saw them both on the way out and back in, driving the entire 6 miles of sandy beach, but these beauties pictured above with the foal we glimpsed at the very end as we drove off the beach. Back in town, the beautiful brick Currituck Beach Lighthouse offered epic panoramic views, and Historic Corolla Park gave us a glimpse into the area’s maritime past. That evening we had a romantic dinner at the charming Colington Cafe – a converted victorian home a bit off the beaten path.

Day 6: Vacation Mode On: Oceanfront Fun Around OBX

We spent the morning around Jeanette’s Pier, a famous fishing and photo spot which has endured numerous hurricanes throughout the centuries – including an encounter with an unearthed sunken ship! Lunch at Dirty Dick’s Crab House lived up to its name in all the best ways—messy, delicious, and unforgettable. In the afternoon, we went full vacation mode with mini golf and go-karts at Mutiny Bay, then headed to Beachcombers Tiki Hut for dinner and live music. Finally, we ended the day drinking delicious craft beers at the local Swells’a Brewing Beer Co. Tuesdays in OBX are a vibe!

Day 7: Exploring Roanoke Sound & The Oregon Inlet

We’d traveled OBX for nearly a week by land, so decided to see this beautiful landscape from a different vantage point – by sea! The hot, sunshine-filled day called for an adventure—a full-day pontoon rental from OBX Pontoon Man. Cruising the water, we fished and adventured through Roanoke Sound and the Oregon Inlet, putzing up and down riverways, and pulling ashore on hidden beaches. We even came across an entire pod of dolphin while out in the Sound, and there were dozens of them coming right up to the boat and playing in our wake – adults and babies alike as the area is known to be a breeding ground for them! It was such an incredible sight to experience.

Day 8: Dunes, Wildlife & Sunset Farewells

Our last full day was a mix of adrenaline and awe. We tackled the sand dunes of Jockey’s Ridge, a legendary location for hang gliders looking to cach some air. From there, we drove to Pea Island Wildlife Refuge and the historic Chicamacomico Life Saving Station to learn about the heroic beginnings of what would become the present day U.S. Coast Guard, and the 177,000+ men they’ve saved from sunken ships in what’s known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”. Lunch was seafood heaven at Sea Chef overlooking the Oregon Inlet – a fisherman’s paradise, and our farewell dinner at Tale of the Whale came with a sunset overlooking the Roanoke Sound.

Day 9: Before We Take Flight

We checked out by 11:00 but made the most of our final day with a visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills – it was like stepping into the very moment that changed the course of history. Standing at the top of the granite monument, overlooking the exact field where Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first powered flight in 1903, gave us chills. The visitor center brought their story to life with original tools, replicas of the gliders, and insights into the trial-and-error that led to flight. We walked the path marking the distance of their first four flights, each one longer than the last, and couldn’t help but feel inspired by their perseverance and innovation. It’s a must-visit for history buffs, families, or anyone who’s ever looked up at the sky and dreamed of flying.

Final Thoughts

The Outer Banks gave us everything: wild beauty, slow mornings, seafood overload, and family memories that will last forever. Whether it was driving down Highway 12 with no agenda or watching wild horses in the surf, the OBX reminded us to breathe, explore, and savor the moment.
